Barbara Keal

Professional background

I started my training as a cadet nurse in 1957 and I trained to become a State Registered Nurse between 1958 and 1961.

I have worked as a staff nurse in general theatres and neurosurgical theatres at the Derbyshire Royal Infirmary. I also carried out a cardiac and thoracic nursing course at Papworth Hospital.

Additionally, I have worked as a ward sister in the intensive care unit at the Derbyshire Royal Infirmary, as a district nursing sister, and I have held the post of matron/manager at Derby City General Hospital's intensive therapy unit.

Areas of expertise

From 1982 until my retirement in 2004, I specialized in critical care nursing. My interest was in all areas of critical care including respiratory, cardiac, medical, surgical and anaesthetics with a special interest in nutrition.

Professional Concern

As one of the founding members of Professional Concern, I strongly believe that I, and others like me, have a great deal of expertise and experience to offer the nursing profession. Professional Concern's members are all highly motivated with experience in many different nursing disciplines.

I'm keen that Professional Concern offers help to the nursing profession where needed, whilst keeping the patient front of mind. Whilst there is a danger of always referring to 'the good old days', I do believe today's nursing environment can benefit from the tried and tested working practices of yesteryear.
