Hygiene

In April 2009, members of Professional Concern followed the current NHS training in the aseptic non-touch technique (ANTT). The training was provided by staff from the Royal Derby Hospital.

The purpose of the training was to fully understand the current guidelines and training that is being given to the nursing staff on today's wards. This will then enable members of Professional Concern to carry out audits on the practice of the aseptic non-touch technique at the Royal Derby Hospital.

The training scheme, which is endorsed by the Department of Health, is in operation nationally and has been running for almost two years across the Acute Hospital Trust in Derby.

The training programme aims to:

  • plan and deliver a consistent multi-professional programme of training and assessment of competency, which will create professional, standardized safe practice
  • provide a robust audit trail of personnel performance, and a two-yearly recall or re-assessment of competency
  • build on the strong collaborative partnerships with the wider health community to influence and roll out ANTT principles across Derbyshire

Members of Professional Concern found the training extremely informative and look forward to contributing in a positive way to the roll-out of the ANTT programme in Derby.

It is expected that the success of ANTT training will be measured through a major audit of compliance, with which members of Professional Concern hope to assist.
